Top 10 Dive Spots – The World’s Best Scuba Diving Sites
With so many dive spots to choose from its hard to decide- below are the top 10 dive spots.
Top 10 Dive Spots
1. Barracuda Point, Palau Sippidan, Sabah, Borneo
- Jacques Cousteau, the world-renowned oceanographer, described Sipadan Island as ‘an untouched piece of art’ but for divers, this dive site proves to be one of the most remarkable diving experiences of their lives. While this site is famous for its 600 m limestone wall and wall of barracudas, divers should expect to see tons of sea-life including turtles and reef sharks.
- Tip: book in advance as Parks & Wildlife management limit the number of divers at Sipidan to 120 per day.
- Tip: Check travel advisory as this area has been known for their pirate kidnappings a few years back
2. Palau, Micronesia
- This 90 mile coral lagoon hosts over 1000 different types of fish and while the abundant sea life make this dive site famous is also a great spot for wall dives, blue holes and underwater caverns.
3. Ras Mohammed National Park (Red Sea), Egypt
- This national park’s unique underwater topography offers divers an array offish including barracudas, Napoleon Wrasse and sharks.
- highlights: Shark & Yolanda Reef- this reef you can spot almost every species of fish in the Red Sea.
4. Similian Islands, Thailand
- Somewhere in between Thailand and Burma lies a stretch of water that attracts feeding game fish, whale sharks, mantas and leopard sharks. This site offers fantastic diving for all levels of experience (depths range from 2 – 30 m)
- Tip: The best way to experience the site is through a live-aboard.
5. Utila Island, Honduras
- At the most southern end of Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (a series of reefs stretching some 450 miles across the Caribbean Sea) you will find yourself in one of the best dive sites in the world. Come in the Spring or Fall and you may have the opportunity to swim amongst Whale Sharks (they can measure up to 30 feet and weigh up to 20 tones) but they are one of the friendliest fishes in the sea- feeding only on Plankton and tiny sea creatures. You may also have the opportunity to play with dolphins and swim with barracudas.
6. Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
- This dive site has been famous amongst divers for its array of marine life and challenging geographical conditions. Divers will have a chance to glimpse morays, turtles, marine iguanas, hammerheads, sting rays and whale sharks.
7. Raja Ampat, Indonesia
- This dive site is made up of four small islands and 1500 lush limestone islands that is home to highest fish count in the world. As a diver you will get to see some pretty cool fish including: mantas with 10 inch wings, pygmy seahorses, walking sharks and unicorn fish. It is also site to some WW II shipwrecks
8. Blue Hole, Belize
- Jacques Cousteau declared this site one top 10 dive sites in the world. If you love diving with sharks check out this site for its array of hammerheads, bull sharks and reef sharks. The depth of the hole is 480 feet (145 M) which gives the water a crystal blue colour that provides fantastic visibility.
9. Greet Barrier Reef, Australia
- This wonder of the world stretches over 1200 miles and has a little bit of everything for both the beginner and more advanced diver. With over 1500 species of fish the clear shallow water and beautiful reef create fantastic diving conditions.
10. Coron Island, Philippines
- While very difficult to get to during the low season, this site offers some of the best ship wreck diving out there. Fifteen Japanese ships sunk by U.S. fighter planes roost on the floor of Coron Bay just south of Busuanga. Getting to the dive site from Coron takes anywhere from 2- 4 hours but the diving is cheap (approximately $40 a tank).
- Tip: most dives are for advanced divers only; however, there are a few dives that are less than 25 m that are suitable for beginners.
Here are some pictures from my recent dives in Indonesia:
These top 10 dive spots are spectacular – any serious diver should make these a must see over their diving career.
