Known as the poor man’s Galapagos, a trip out to Pisco or Isla Ballestas will give you a chance to view sea lion colonies, penguins and abundant bird life.
Getting to Pisco:
Pisco is 4 hours from Lima. 1.5- 2 hours from ICA
Activities in Pisco:
- Trip to Isla Ballesta costs around $10 and leaves at 7 am.
- Paracase overland is a popular backpackers agency
Sleeping in Pisco:
- There is no need to spend the night, after you have had an opportunity to see the wildlife, get on a bus and head to Ica)
- We actually went on a prearranged tour to Pisco through Casa de Arena in Ica (as we were coming from the South)
If you choose to stay in Pisco, most travelers stay in central Pisco. A great option is Hostal la Reserva (singles from $10 and doubles from $20). The rooms are sparkling and they includes fans, cable t.v. and erratic hot water. While the rooms are great, the front desk staff are not very friendly. Another cheaper option is Hostal Los Inkas Inn (singles from $9 and doubles from $13). This small family owned guesthouse, has simple but tidy rooms with a small swimming pool and rooftop terrace.
Pisco makes for a quick stopover.
