Every traveler to Europe needs a solid backpacking Western Europe itinerary. Many backpackers start their first backpacking adventures in Western Europe, the itinerary  below outlines all the hotspots along the Western Europe circuit.

26 Day Netherlands to Greece Backpacking Western Europe Itinerary Adventure

Day 1-2

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Once you get over your jet lag, discover the city that once inspired Rembrant and Van Gogh and continues to enchant visitors with its canals, bridges and parks. Visit the Rijksmuseum to marvel at the Night Watch, the Van Gogh Museum to witness’s Vang Gogh’s love of colour, cruise along the canal to the wartime hiding place of Anne Frank and take a whiff of one of Amsterdam’s famous coffee shops.


Days 3-4

Paris, France

Arrive in the city of romance after a short train ride from Amsterdam where you can scale the Eiffel tower, visit the Louvre, explore Montmare, take a stroll along the Champs Elysees and grab a seat at a cozy street-side café to take in the view as Parisians stroll by.


Days 5-6

Nice/Monaco, France

Travel by train to the stylish French Riviera. Walk down Nice’s Promenade des Anglais (“Promenade of the English”) visit the Pedestrian Zone where you can indulge in a good glass of wine and a salad Nicoise. Pretend like you are a multimillionaire on a day trip to Monaco, perhaps even paying a visit to the famed Monte Carlo Casino


Days 6-7

Interlaken, Switzerland

Take an overnight train to Interlaken – Europe’s adventure capital. Don’t be surprised by the many parachuters in the air as you arrive in this small town just outside of Lauberbrunnen. This backpacker friendly town has tons of budget accommodation and many companies offering skydiving, hand gliding and paragliding.


Days 8-9

Venice, Italy

Discover the meaning of “la dolce vita” in this sinking city. Take a boat ride on a gondola (or if your budget doesn’t permit, watch couples serenaded on the gondolas), enjoy the view from the Rialto Bridge and explore Saint Mark’s Basilica and the adjoining Piazza San Marco. If you have time, take a vaporetto over to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore and climb the bell tower for the best view of the city.


Days 10-11

Cinque Terre, Italy

Weave through this charming coastal town, trekking through the five hillside villages and exploring the mountains and sparkling sea below. Walk through olive groves and vineyards, finishing off your hike with a dip in the Mediterranean and some sumptuous seafood.


Days 12-13

Florence, Italy

Appreciate the beauty of Tuscany’s romantic capital by exploring the city’s statues, fountains and its ‘outdoor museum’. View art treasures in the Medici Chapels and Uffizi Gallery and be captivated by Michelangelo’s David. If you have time, take a quick day trip to the leaning tower of Pisa or cycle through Tuscany’s vineyards.

Days 14-15

Rome, Italy

Any history buff will be mesmerized by Rome’s ancient capital city. With iconic sights, such as the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and Coliseum all sharing space with high-end boutiques and cafes, travelers cannot help but be awestruck by the pieces of history lurking behind every corner.


Days 16-17

Corfu, Greece

Take an overnight ferry from Brindisi, Italy to Corfu where you can explore small towns, beautiful beaches and party at the Pink Palace Hotel. Spend your days beach hopping from the crystal clear Barbati Beach to the populated, stony beaches of Dasia and Ipsos.

Days 18-21

Santorini, Greece

If you feel like splurging hop on a flight from Corfu to Santorini, otherwise spend a long evening aboard a ferry en route from Corfu to Santorini. Located on the edge of an enormous caldera, Santorini is known for its whitewashed buildings, black sand beaches and stunning sunsets. Do as the locals do and rent a scooter to explore this beautiful island.


Days 22-24

Ios or Mykonos, Greece

Both these party islands are a great place to let loose. However, they offer very similar experiences, so if you are short on time pick one or the other. Mykonos, named in honour of the Greek G-d Apollo’s grandson, Mykonos elicits the classic Grecian vision of white houses juxtaposed against the blue sea. Join the party crowd visiting one of the island’s many bars/ clubs or spend an afternoon soaking up the rays. In Ios, travelers will have the opportunity to explore sandy beaches and traverse windy alleyways. Feast on delicious seafood before going out and enjoying the island’s famed nightlife.


Days 25-26

Athens, Greece

Finish off your European adventure in Greece’s ancient capital city. Arrive early to beat the crowds and the heat and head up to the iconic Parthenon. Take a walk past the Temple of Olympian Zeus, take back a shot of ouzo and sit in the shady Syntagma Square.
